How we worked this out

Families use a baby monitor for about two and a half years — newborn through the toddler bed. So that’s the stretch we priced, instead of just the number on the checkout page.

For everything else in the wellness category we took what they cost today: around $390 for a camera and a parent screen, and then a plan. Plans come in tiers — about $9 a month at the bottom, $25 or more at the top — and we used the cheapest one every time. We added the parts a baby outgrows and you buy again, gave every product the free trial it comes with, and rounded down. That comes to about $10 a month once the trial ends.

So the figures above are the friendliest version of the other side. Pick a bigger plan, as plenty of families do, and the gap widens from here.
